Mermaid Vision by joshparkinson Mermaid Vision by joshparkinson
This piece is a digital painting done in photoshop. It was inspired by the story of how sailors and pirates would get lost out at sea and mistake manatees for mermaids. Personally I don't know how this could happen but I thought it would make a fun piece. I really wanted to focus on a simple and elegant design and color scheme. Also after looking at many Rockwell Paintings I wanted to accentuate the poses of my characters and really bring them to life.

I guess a long way from a female and a quite a bit of rum and you forget what a woman looks like but seriously awesome work.

It's all that rum, don'tchaknow. :D  Easy to see why pirates would mistake manatees for mermaids with all that rum in their systems!

What heard has a grain of truth. There was no mistake, the fact of the matter is that manatees in particular have very human-like vaginas and sailors fucked them.

If I drank the whole bottle of that rum, I would also see manatees as mermaids. :)

I adore the composition and use of color to produce shading and lighting vibrancy! and the allusion to Rockwell is apparent but not overwhelming. :D It's so splendidly done overall.

(might I also add that I kinda like the underlying message of beauty only being skin deep. wonderful<3).

That said, this painting also absolutely terrifies me (I'm deathly afraid of the sea) so you've accomplished many things here~

I have no idea what to say. Here is my try.It is just perfect and you portray the manatee/mermaid perfectly. The manatee body has even the right emotions.I have seen manatees up close in person before and observed them carefully.

Am I mistaken or is there a manatee silhouette along the surface of the water on the left side and another silhouette of some creature beneath the head of the mertee along the bottom edge??

Hehehe. I remembering going through a HUGE manatee phase when I was a kid. I still have the stuffed manatee and sleep with him every night. I always thought it was weird how sailors truly believed that the manatees were mermaids. OH, have you ever seen "How I met Your Mother?" They did a thing about that.

What made me laugh when she was dressed in the manatee costume while at dinner was how she held the glass, she uses her two hands to pick up the glass, but it looked awkward. XD

I've only caught a couple of HIMYM episodes, but I'm seriously considering Netflixing them. It just looks that funny. Not only that, but apparently there's quite a story arc with the whole show.

oh! I watched a documentary about Amazonian manatees once and this was actually included! :D they said apparently people would mistake them for mermaids because manatees don't really show themselves out of the water, they just poke their heads out slightly to get food off the surface and to breathe and stuff. And the food they tend to eat (leafy things floating on the surface and stuff like that) sometimes would get stuck on the tops of their heads as they poke em out of the water, giving the illusion that they have hair. This caused sailors and such, mainly at a distance of course, to mistake them for woman who lived underwater. :)

I really like this piece! very nice! :) the empty bottles are fitting because it makes it more believable for someone to mistake a sea creature for a pretty lady. :iconheheplz:

the little doggy freaking out and the boat tilting (from the weight of the creature im assuming XD) are a nice touch too.
